Freedom, Fear and Hope

We all want more freedom.  Freedom from the struggles of our lives, freedom from things that bind and constrict us, freedom of ideas, freedom to be, freedom to love, freedom of choice.  Freedom is outdoors, freedom is open spaces and loose clothing.  Freedom is liberating, it is optimistic.

Freedom pulls us forward.

Fear is the opposite.  Fear is about closed spaces.  It keeps us near, shuts us in.  Fear limits our choices.  We build walls, put on extra layers, keep the enemy out when we’re afraid.  Fear stops us from advancing, stops us from growing, stops us from listening.  It creates separation from everyone and everything.

Fear holds us back.

Hope is different.  Hope is an optimistic reaction to an unknown future.  No one hopes for fear for themselves.  We all hope for more freedom. But, hope lacks verbs.  It’s an optimistic frame of reference, but it’s a bit passive.

Hoping for freedom is not the same as acting to make it happen.

Ask yourself – If we all want to be free and none of us wants to be afraid, how could anyone (including you) want anyone (including “them”) to be fearful?  Freedom at the expense of others diminishes our own success, doesn’t it?

So, more freedom, less fear.  More open doors, less closed ones.  Let’s make it happen together.

Where will you start?
